They Asked for a Roof, not a Meal.

Coimbatore DistrictOne evening, one of our trustees stepped out of a hotel in Thudiyalur. A young mother approached him. She was holding a baby. A small child was walking beside her. She was asking for help with dinner.
He could have simply helped her with a meal and walked away. Instead, he stopped and asked her about her family.
“Are there others living like you here?”
She took him to a place nearby. What he found there was difficult to forget.
30 families, living on the streets
Among them were:
- Babies
- Small children
- Women
- Men
- Elderly people
Families trying to get through each day without a proper roof over their heads.
The trustee initially thought they would ask for food, clothes or money. But when he asked what they needed most, their answer was unexpected.
“We need tarpaulin.”
Something to put over their heads
They weren't asking for something to change their lives overnight. They were asking for something to put over their heads:
- Something to protect their children from the scorching sun.
- Something to keep the rain from falling directly on them during the monsoon.
- Something to give their families a little protection through the seasons.
And that simple request stayed with us. So Alorah Foundation decided to help.
How you can help
We are raising ₹30,000 to provide tarpaulin sheets for all 30 families. That's approximately ₹1,000 for one family.

- Put a covering over a family's living space.
- Keep rain away from a sleeping child.
- Give an elderly person protection from the harsh weather.
- Give a family a little more safety through the changing seasons.
It may only be a sheet of tarpaulin. But to a family living on the street, it can feel like a roof.
