Disaster relief: shelter, food and rebuilding after a calamity

When a flood, a fire or a cyclone empties a street, the first week decides how bad the next year will be. Alorah Foundation provides immediate relief and then stays for the rebuilding, which is the part the cameras miss.

What Alorah Foundation does in this cause

  • Immediate relief: food, drinking water, bedding, clothing and temporary shelter.
  • Medical care in the days after, when infection does more damage than the water did.
  • Replacement of the documents a family loses, which is what blocks every other kind of help.
  • Rebuilding support: materials, tools and the labour cost of making a house liveable again.
  • Restarting the livelihood that was washed away, not only the house that was.

Who this reaches, and how we follow it

Relief is easy to raise money for in week one and almost impossible in month six, and month six is when a family is still sleeping under a sheet. Our disaster work is written to run past the point where attention moves on, and funded needs are documented for years afterwards for the same reason.

Every open need on alorah.org shows what is required, what has come in and what is still short, and funded projects are photographed before, after and for five years afterwards. Where a person’s dignity asks for privacy, the outcome is documented without photographs. See the live needs for what is open today.
