Hunger and basic needs: food, clothing and shelter

Hunger is the need that will not wait. Alorah Foundation runs community kitchens, food distribution and emergency relief across Tamil Nadu, and provides clothing and shelter for people who have neither.

What Alorah Foundation does in this cause

  • Community kitchens and cooked meal distribution for the homeless and the destitute.
  • Dry ration kits for families who have income but not enough of it, sized to last a month.
  • Clothing, bedding and basic household goods for families starting again with nothing.
  • Emergency shelter support for people sleeping rough, and help finding somewhere permanent.
  • Immediate food relief alongside our disaster work when a flood or fire empties a street.

Who this reaches, and how we follow it

A plate of food reaches somebody the same day. That is why this cause carries the shortest gap between a donation arriving and a person being fed, and why it is usually where a first time donor starts. We work with people the formal system misses: the homeless, migrant labourers between jobs, families where the only earner has fallen ill, and elderly people living alone.

Every open need on alorah.org shows what is required, what has come in and what is still short, and funded projects are photographed before, after and for five years afterwards. Where a person’s dignity asks for privacy, the outcome is documented without photographs. See the live needs for what is open today.

If you need help

If you or somebody you know needs food, rations or clothing, apply for assistance and a trustee will call you. There is no fee, and nobody is asked their caste or their religion. Assistance is offered without discrimination of caste, creed, religion or gender, and the documents you send are held privately and never published.

If you want to help

Every donation to Alorah Foundation is eligible for deduction under Section 80G of the Income-tax Act, and your receipt carries the registration numbers your accountant will ask for. You do not need an account to give. Read how the 80G tax benefit works, or give now on the donate section.
